The History of SAVF Herfsakker Old Age Home

Ms Cecilia van Wyk identified the need for an old age home with help for her husband, the mayor at the time, founded Herfsakker Old Age Home in 1979. Cecilia van Wyk, a volunteer worker for the South African Women’s Federation (SAVF), involved the organisation and managed to raise funds by gaining the support of prominent business people and the municipality. Land was obtained and the goal of offering care, nutrition and socializing for older persons was achieved.

The Herfsakker Old Age Home is a member of South African Women’s Federation – a registered national welfare organisation. Furthermore, the home is registered with the Mpumalanga Department of Health and Social Services as a frail care centre and the National Department of Social Development as a non-profit organisation.

The SAVF is a community driven project and is managed by volunteers and dedicated team of employees. The constitution of SAVF was amended in recent years to allow men to become member of the organisation.

Our Vision:

Our Mission:

“Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the souls.” Samuel Ullman
